H1N1 flu increases complication in children with sickle cell anemia: study
This article is based on a study which shows that children infected with Sickle Cell Anemia are hit harder by the H1N1 flu, compared to a normal child who is infected with H1N1. Regular symptoms of the flu include a high fever, a runny nose, and coughing. However, children who contract H1N1 have about five times the risk of being hospitalized. When children infected with Sickle Cell Anemia catch H1N1, they have a large chance of developing a deadly condition called Acute Chest Syndrome. Acute Chest Syndrome causes the lungs to become inflamed and swollen, and it makes it very difficult for one to breathe.
I feel that this article was very informative. It shined a light on issues that children with Sickle Cell Anemia suffer with, that i never even knew about. I was unaware that kids with Sickle Cell Anemia had such a big risk when it came to viruses. It's so sad that children have to suffer with such a terrible disease. I also had no idea what Acute Chest Syndrome was.
